My goal is to improve basic services and enhance quality of life.

Ann Arbor is already an amazing community, but there’s a lot of work to be done. Check out some areas of interest below.

Improving Basic Services

You deserve a Mayor who works every day to improve your basic services. I do and I will.

  • BUDGET DISCIPLINE

I commit to you that we will maintain budget discipline, spend wisely, and grow responsibly. Even though only 25% of your property taxes goes to the City of Ann Arbor (AAATA, County, Schools, WISD, WCC and such take the rest), we need to ensure that residents to get the best value for their dollar. We’ve fixed our structural deficit I’ll keep it that way. We will maintain our AA+ Bond Rating.

  • CLEAN WATER

Clean water is non-negotiable and a top priority. Our infrastructure is aging and needs to be replaced and upgraded. We need to plan and build Water Treatment Plan improvements, expand the fight against PFAS, maintain our lawsuit against the Gelman polluter, and press the EPA to get further involved to accelerate 1,4 dioxane monitoring and cleanup.

  • WALKING & BIKING

Ann Arbor is a walking and biking town. With miles of new sidewalks, bike lanes and bikeways, and scores of new streetlights, we’ve made great strides. I will continue to support sidewalks and bikeways and to ensure that roads and crosswalks are safe for all users – by design! We need to improve safety, enable non-motorized commuting, and reduce congestion while advancing our climate goals.

  • ROADS

We deserve better roads. We get most of our road money from the state, and Michigan has for years been 50th out of 50 states in per capita road spending. Even with Lansing’s failures, however, due to several local millages we are able to spend $30M+/yr from our Local Streets; Major Streets; Road, Sidewalk, and Bridge funds. We need to accelerate spending even further. Look a major push in 2022/2023 – particularly on deteriorating neighborhood streets!

  • PUBLIC SAFETY

We need to keep AAPD one of the best departments in Michigan, even as we develop a progressive, unarmed response system in Ann Arbor. Not every public safety issue requires an armed officer. We also need to implement the Fire Station Master Plan and take other measures to improve response time efficiency and firefighter wellness. I’m so grateful for all of Ann Arbor’s first responders – individuals who put their safety on the line every day to protect ours.

  • STORM WATER | SEWER

Our waste water and storm water track record is excellent, and we need to keep it that way. System investments have led to 100% National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System compliance and a Class 6 assessment in the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System, reducing flood insurance rates by 20%. We can’t stop now. With climate change increasing precipitation in Ann Arbor, look for crucial storm water programs in hard-hit areas of town.

Enhancing Quality of Life

You deserve a Mayor who works every day to enhance your qualify of life. I do and I will.

  • EQUITY

No matter your background or lived experiences, you are welcome in Ann Arbor. I will continue to support the Black Lives Matter movement, welcome immigrants and refuges to Ann Arbor, condemn local antisemitism and anti-Asian hate, work to reintegrate returning citizens into our community, and always speak out with Ann Arbor Pride in support of our LGBTQIA+ community. Increasing equity has been, and will always be, a key priority of mine.

Finally, an equitable community also means creating good paying jobs for residents. Often times, those jobs are union jobs, and I will continue to support organized labor’s efforts to increase worker power.

  • AFFORDABLE HOUSING

As of 2015, Washtenaw County was the 8th most economically segregated county in the country. With that economic segregation comes racial segregation, and for me that’s not acceptable. We need to increase housing supply to meet demand in Ann Arbor and we need to build housing that is affordable.

During my tenure, I have been a strong proponent of sensible development and for the use of City money and land to create affordable housing. It’s a long process, but we are on the cusp of real progress. Over the next four years I expect that the City will approve 100s of new, affordable units in the downtown, with more to come!

  • COMMUNITY CLIMATE ACTION

Our A2Zero goal looks to achieve community-wide carbon neutrality by 2030. To get there, we will roll out a set of new programs to advance equity and fundamentally improve quality of life in a way that saves people money: Year-round composting; expanded residential recycling; community and rooftop solar programs; rental and low-income household energy programs; bicycle, and pedestrian transit infrastructure; neighborhood resource centers; electric vehicle infrastructure; and 1000s of new trees.

If reelected, I will continue to prioritize aggressively combating the climate crisis so that we can ensure that we are the best stewards of our community’s resources
